Het was, bijna de perfecte combinatie. Twee intelligente mensen die aan slapeloosheid lijden, Kevin (Michael Keaton) en Julia (Geena Davis), ontmoeten elkaar bij het laatste doosje slaaptabletten in een nachtwinkel en voelen zich meteen tpt elkaar aangetrokken. Ze beleven samen een een nacht vol passie en romantiek en komen tot de ontdekking dat ze snel veel gemeen hebben..misschien zelfs wel te veel. Als ze erachter komen dat ze allebei speeches schrijven - echter voor tegengestelde politieke campagnes - zijn ze sprakeloos. Het sprakeloos wordt echter al snel meedogenloos en in plaats van lieve woordjes wisslene ze ernstige mondelinge dolkstoten uit. Maar hoe meer ze elkaar in de ug steken en rechtstreeks beledigen, des te meer komen ze erachter dat ware liefde niet altijd volgens de lijnen van de politiek verloopt.
