De Amerikaanse journalist David Raybourne komt naar Rome om een boek te schrijven over de leden van de linkse militante terreurgroep de 'Rode Brigades', die Italië terroriseert. Een ondernemende fotografe krijgt zijn manuscript onder ogen en gelooft dat de roman op waarheid berust, echter door haar schuld valt de drukproef in verkeerde handen.
